The separator goes between the positive and negative electrodes of a Li-ion battery (LiB), preventing electrical short while enabling Li-ions flow through the electrolyte. Well-distributed and finely-tuned micropores in the film are critical. To maximize energy density, separator films have been thinning, now reaching about 9 micrometers. Such extremely slim films require high tensile strength, heat resistance and wettability. By meeting these demanding requirements, the separator film plays a pivotal role for the safety of LiB and contributes substantially to overall performance and lifespan.
